Oakland, CA (Sports Network) - The Oakland Athletics signed outfielder Jeremy Hermida on Friday after he was recently released by the Boston Red Sox. He was sent to Triple-A Sacramento. Hermida, who appeared in 52 games for the Red Sox this season, was sent to Triple-A Pawtucket and released just before the waiver deadline. He batted .203 with five homers and 27 RBI in the majors. In 568 career games, most with Florida, Hermida has a .259 batting average with 62 homers and 237 RBI.

Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia has undergone successful surgery on the navicular bone of his left foot. Pedroia had a screw inserted on Friday to promote healing of the fracture, which occurred June 25 in San Francisco when he fouled a ball off the foot. The procedure was performed by Dr. George Theodore and Dr. Tom Gill at Massachusetts General Hospital.
